Don't book the first nice-looking rental
Split your trip across two or three different neighborhoods -- downtown, a quieter in-town pocket, and maybe something west -- rather than staying in one spot the whole visit. The difference in daily rhythm between them is bigger than photos ever show.
Walk it at the wrong times
Walk Atlantic Avenue at 7am and at 10pm. Drive your potential commute at actual rush hour, not on a lazy Sunday. The neighborhood you fall for on a perfect afternoon needs to hold up on an ordinary Tuesday too.
